Fascinating Read(Scars)

I really did enjoy this story. I met the author at SciFi Valley Con and I had bought a number of books from sellers, and this one I do not regret. I adore urban fantasy type stories, and the Dresden Files is my favorite. So when the author made the reference to the series, he had me hooked. It was a quick read (not a complaint) and I love the story. I liked the main character and I felt that he was very well written. Some constructive criticism: The story felt rushed at times, and I had a few questions about the world. I would say to flesh out the world a bit more, and mayhap slow down a tad. But the story was enjoyable. I liked the characters and the story. I look forward to more from this author.

Excellent story that could benefit from more details(Scars)

I met the author at a con last month, where he was selling copies of his book. I can’t walk by a vendor table of a local author and not stop to support/learn more. He told me the premise of his story and his plans for a series, and I bought a copy to read. Let’s start with what I like about Scars of a Magician: It’s a very quick read, both in terms of length and writing. I would classify it as a YA fantasy novel, which I can’t get enough of. Herring has a good head for his story, and I found myself thinking about the story when I wasn’t reading it. I also love the fact that almost all (if not all) of the characters are black, which makes the story more real. I have two pieces of criticism that I want to share, and I mean these to be constructive, as I know there are future stories planned. 1 – Add more details! Tell us more about this world you have built! How does magic work? Is it only genetic or are there “muggles”? Go into more detail about the spell casting that involves drawing – that is fascinating and I want to learn more about it! How far away are the Academies from one another? What do the carriages look like? How high off the ground do the hover boards get? Most importantly, tell us more about the warrior cats! The story can seem rushed at times, but filling in the details of this magical world will help slow down pace so that we can savor the world more. 2 – The dialogue between characters comes across as inauthentic at times. It does not read as conversations that real people would have. Dialogue between characters is a great way for the reader to get to know the characters better – who they are and what they want. This goes back to point one, about adding more detail to your story to make the world more alive. Having more robust conversations helps develop the secondary characters, which also adds to the richness of the world you create. Overall, I really liked the story that Herring developed for the book. I look forward to reading future stories set in this world!

I found the book /story well thought out and very interesting. It would be an excellent movie for young Black readers and would be a great supplemental reading book for schools.
